The Bourne-Sandwich Rotary Club has entered its second year with Cape Kid Meals and has been able to feed an additional 20 children over last year.

The club sends food to the Bournedale Elementary School, the James F. Peebles Elementary School, the Oak Ridge School, and the Forestdale School. Each school then selects 30 students to send the food home with.

The schools select the students based on who gets free or reduced lunch.

Rotary Club member Mary Carlson said that roughly a quarter of Bourne’s students are considered economically disadvantaged.

“We still don’t meet the needs,” she said, saying that they were able to add an additional five care packages to each school every weekend.

Each package contains food that will feed one child over the weekend when that child may not otherwise have enough food to eat at home. While the packages vary depending on what items are available, they generally contain the following: granola bars, pudding cups, fruit snacks, instant oatmeal, macaroni and cheese, cheese and crackers, juice boxes, cereal, canned pasta, applesauce, a fruit cup, and two pieces of fresh fruit.
